Almost daily, I get approached by at least one person asking me if I know a decent website developer or where they can find someone to build them a website.
For a long time I’ve been telling people that I can’t help them because if I don’t know someone amazing then I would rather not recommend anyone at all. The truth is there are too many people out there calling themselves website developers when they are nothing more than glorified button pushers.
Recently I’ve launched a Facebook Live series called “8 o’clock advice“ where I talk though relevant topics and discuss questions that my Facebook friends have. One such question was “How do I find the right website developer?” and it instantly hit a nerve with me because the truth is that for many, it’s a challenge.
If you are not a developer yourself, then how do you know what you are looking for?
One answer would be to hire a developer and then hire another developer to check the work of the first — but who really wants to go through all that hassle (and extra cost) to get a second opinion? Even with well known outsourcing websites, there is no guarantee that you will find someone who can give you what you need. Most only give you what they think you want.
Business owners shouldn’t be humored with their websites, though. So whenever I do consultations, I focus business owners’ energy on what they need.
This topic inspired me to write this blog post and create a 6-part video series covering simple steps. By answering the questions below, you can avoid many common mistakes that business owners make when looking for someone to help them online.
Step 1 – Ask yourself “Do I really need a website?”
Step 2 – Ask yourself “Do I really need a website developer?”
